
Uza. Hawwa Sana began her legal career as a Deputy State Attorney
at the Attorney General’s Office (2013-2014). Since then, she has served in
various posts at the Attorney General’s Office, including the post of State
Attorney (2014-2017) and as a Senior State Attorney (2017-2019). She is
currently serving as a Senior State Counsel since July 2019.
Her work includes, representing the State in all civil
cases at Tribunals, Superior Courts, High Court and the Supreme Court of
Maldives including constitutional cases heard by the High Court and Supreme
Court of the Maldives. Uza. Hawwa Sana’s responsibilities also include
supervision of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Division such as vetting
of submissions, statements and appeals to Courts of the Republic of Maldives,
management of Litigation Secretariat Section, as well as drafting legal
opinions to government institutions and representing the Government in
International Arbitration proceedings.
She
always had a keen interest in working in public interest litigations and is
currently leading the case of the migrant workers renumeration class action
suit lodged in the Employment Tribunal of Maldives, where the workers are
represented by Public Interest Law Centre where she is currently working as a
member. She is also is also a partner in Astute Advocacy LLP, a private law
firm, since August 2020.
Furthermore,
she was part of the team of the Attorney General’s Office in the arbitration
proceeding which was held between Axis Bank Limited against Government of
Maldives and Maldives Airport Company Limited and in the arbitration proceeding
between GMR-MAHB Consortium and GMR Male’ International Airport Private Limited
against Government of Maldives and Maldives Airport Company Limited.

Hawwa Sana graduated with a Master of Laws in Constitutional Politics, Law and
Theory with a Distinction from Birkbeck, University of London, United Kingdom
in 2017, where she attained first place in her Master’s Course and obtained her
Bachelor of Laws, Second Class Honours from King’s College London, United
Kingdom in 2013.
